"And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."
— Matthew 16:18 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about the church want Scripture for belonging, for a bruised congregation, or for why gathering still matters — not a building catalog. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and church. Related lists: Bible verses about the Holy Spirit, Bible verses about the cross, Bible verses about unity, Bible verses about serving others, Bible verses about loving others, and Love and unity. Here the focus is the church as Christ's people and body — distinct from unity's "how we stay one" list (Bible verses about unity) and from individual identity in Christ (Bible verses about identity). For Christ as the stone the church is built on, see cornerstone Bible verses.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "church" is ἐκκλησία ekklēsia (Strong's G1577) — an assembly, a called-out gathering; in the New Testament, the people belonging to Christ locally and universally. See also Bible Hub G1577. Related: σῶμα sōma (Strong's G4983; Bible Hub G4983) — body, used of the church as Christ's body.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Matthew 16 presses Christ's building: "Christ has his church… He will build it upon a rock… The gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Bible Hub commentaries on Matthew 16:18; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC Matthew 16). On Ephesians 5 he names Christ's love for the church: "Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it" (Bible Hub commentaries on Ephesians 5:25; Bible Hub MHC Ephesians 5).

12 Bible verses about the church
Matthew 16:18. "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." The church is Christ's to build — and hell does not get the last word. See Love and church.
Ephesians 5:25-27. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy… and to present her to himself as a radiant church…" Christ loved the church enough to give himself — cleansing and radiance are his aim. See Bible verses about the cross and Bible verses about marriage.
Acts 2:42. "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Early church life had four ordinary pillars: teaching, fellowship, table, prayer. See Bible verses about prayer and Bible verses about friendship.
Hebrews 10:24-25. "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…" Gathering is for spurring love — not for empty habit. See Bible verses about loving others.
1 Corinthians 12:27. "Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." The church is a body with parts — belonging, not optional extras. Distinct from the unity-list focus in Bible verses about unity.
Colossians 1:18. "And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy." Christ is head; the church is body — supremacy belongs to him. See Bible verses about the head of the church.
1 Timothy 3:15. "…God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth." The church holds up truth as pillar and foundation — household language, not club language. See Bible verses about truth.
Acts 20:28. "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood." The church is blood-bought; leaders watch as shepherds. See Bible verses about the Holy Spirit and Bible verses about the cross.
Ephesians 4:15-16. "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body… grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Growth is bodily and love-built — every part working. See Love and unity.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17. "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy that person; for God's temple is sacred, and you together are that temple." "You" is plural — the gathered people are a temple. See Bible verses about the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:46-47. "Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God… And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Meeting, meals, praise — and the Lord added. See Bible verses about gratitude.
Matthew 18:20. "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." Christ's presence is promised to a small gathering in his name — church can be few and still real. See Love and church and Bible verses about prayer.

Questions people ask
What is a good Bible verse about the church?
Matthew 16:18 (I will build my church), Ephesians 5:25 (Christ loved the church), and Hebrews 10:24-25 (not giving up meeting together) are clear starting places.
What does the Bible say the church is?
Ekklesia (G1577) is a called-out assembly — God's household, Christ's body, a blood-bought flock, and a temple where the Spirit dwells among a people, not only a building.
Why should Christians go to church?
Hebrews 10:24-25 ties gathering to spurring love and good deeds. Acts 2:42 shows devotion to teaching, fellowship, bread, and prayer. Christ promises presence where two or three gather in his name (Matthew 18:20).
How is the church different from unity?
Unity pages focus on keeping oneness (Bible verses about unity). This page names what the church is — body, household, flock Christ builds and loves. Both matter; they are not the same search.
