"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about identity want Scripture for labels that stick too hard — failure, family role, job title, or the mirror on a hard morning. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about purpose, Bible verses about calling, Love and faith, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about salvation, and Bible verses about God's love. Identity here is who you are in Christ — distinct from God's overarching purpose (Bible verses about purpose) and from the specific vocation of Bible verses about calling.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "new creation" uses καινή kaine with κτίσις ktisis (Strong's G2537 / G2937) — new in kind, a created thing remade. See also Bible Hub G2537 and Bible Hub G2937. In Hebrew, being named and claimed by God often uses קָרָא qara (Strong's H7121; Bible Hub H7121) — to call, to name, to summon by name.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on 2 Corinthians 5 names the change: "The regenerated soul is a new creature… old principles and practices are passed away" (Bible Hub commentaries on 2 Corinthians 5:17; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC 2 Corinthians 5). On 1 John 3 he marvels at the name "children of God": "The love of God in giving his Son for us is the greatest instance of love" (Bible Hub commentaries on 1 John 3:1; Bible Hub MHC 1 John 3).

12 Bible verses about identity
2 Corinthians 5:17. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" Identity starts with union — "in Christ" — not with a rebranded résumé. See Love and faith.
1 John 3:1. "See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!…" The name is gift before it is feeling. See Bible verses about God's love.
1 Peter 2:9. "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." Identity comes stacked: chosen, royal, holy, possessed — then sent to declare. Distinct from the vocation list in Bible verses about calling.
John 1:12. "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." Child-of-God status is given to receivers and believers — not earned by polish. See Bible verses about salvation.
Romans 8:16-17. "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…" The Spirit confirms the family name; inheritance follows. See Bible verses about hope.
Ephesians 1:4-5. "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ…" Chosen and adopted before you could impress him.
Colossians 3:3. "For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." Some of your truest self is hidden — safe, not missing — with Christ.
Romans 8:1. "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Identity under grace is not a courtroom that never adjourns. See Bible verses about forgiveness.
Galatians 3:26. "So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith." Faith opens the family door; the name is "children," not "probationers." See Bible verses about faith.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20. "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price…" Owned and indwelt — identity includes the body, not only the "spiritual" self.
Philippians 3:20. "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." Passport language: your deepest belonging is not a city on a map.
Ephesians 2:19. "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household." From outsider language to household language — identity is membership, not loner spirituality. See Love and faith and Bible verses about purpose.
How to use these verses
Pick one verse for a label that hurts, a comparison scroll, or a baptism anniversary — not twelve. If you need new-creation language, start with 2 Corinthians 5:17. If you need the Father's lavished love, start with 1 John 3:1. If you need "chosen people" dignity, start with 1 Peter 2:9. For faith that receives the name, see Love and faith and Bible verses about faith. Questions people ask
What is a good Bible verse about identity in Christ?
2 Corinthians 5:17 (new creation), 1 John 3:1 (children of God), and 1 Peter 2:9 (chosen people) are clear starting places.
What does the Bible say about who I am?
In Christ you are a new creation, a child of God, chosen and adopted, a temple of the Spirit, and a citizen of heaven. Greek kaine ktisis names new creation; Hebrew qara names being called by God.
How is identity different from purpose or calling?
Purpose is God's intent for your life (Bible verses about purpose). Calling is the path or commission you walk (Bible verses about calling). Identity is the name and belonging you already have in Christ before you "figure out" the rest.
What if I still feel like my old self?
Colossians 3:3 says life is hidden with Christ. Romans 8:1 removes condemnation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 names the old as gone even when feelings lag. See also Bible verses about forgiveness and Bible verses about hope.
