"Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me."
— Psalm 41:9 (NIV)
People who search scriptures on betrayal or betrayal verses in the Bible want Scripture for being handed over by someone close — not only the forgiveness list (releasing another's sin). This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about forgiveness, Bible verses about trust, love and forgiveness, love and trust, Bible verses about peace, Bible verses about grief, and Bible verses about love. Betrayal here means the Judas-shaped wound of being handed over — distinct from forgiveness of sin alone.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "betray" / "hand over" is παραδίδωμι paradidomi (Strong's G3860; Bible Hub G3860) — to deliver over, give into the hands of another. Scripture treats betrayal as a real handing-over by a near one — and as a wound Jesus entered first.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Matthew 26 presses that Judas bargained to deliver Jesus — friendship and bread shared did not stop the sell (Bible Hub commentaries on Matthew 26:14; Bible Hub MHC Matthew 26; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Matthew 26). On Psalm 41 he marks the grief of a familiar friend lifting the heel — the wound is sharper because it is near (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalm 41:9; Bible Hub MHC Psalms 41).

What does the Bible say about betrayal?
Scripture does not pretend betrayal is small. It names the wound, and it points the betrayed person to God rather than to revenge.
- God sees the wound. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).
- You can hand the weight to God. "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken" (Psalm 55:22), written right after David's close-friend lament in Psalm 55:12-14.
- Revenge belongs to God. "Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans 12:19).
- God can work through what was meant for harm. Joseph to the brothers who sold him: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20).

12 Bible verses about betrayal
Psalm 41:9. "Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me." Close-friend betrayal is voiced in the psalm — shared bread and lifted heel. See Bible verses about trust.
Matthew 26:14-16. "Then one of the Twelve — the one called Judas Iscariot — went to the chief priests and asked, 'What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?' So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over." Paradidomi begins with a price and a watch for opportunity. See Bible verses about love.
Luke 22:48. "But Jesus asked him, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'" The kiss is named as the sign of betrayal — intimacy weaponized. See Bible verses about grief.
John 13:21. "After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, 'Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.'" Jesus is troubled in spirit — he does not shrug the coming hand-over. See Bible verses about peace when you need steadiness after the shock.
Psalm 55:12-14. "If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend, with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers." Enemy insult is one thing; companion betrayal is another — worship-shared friendship broken.
Zechariah 11:12-13. "I told them, 'If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.' So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said to me, 'Throw it to the potter' — the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord." Thirty pieces name the valuation of the Shepherd — the price of betrayal echoed later. See Bible verses about hope.
Mark 14:18. "While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, 'Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me — one who is eating with me.'" Table fellowship and betrayal in one sentence — eating-with-me is the sting. See love and trust.
John 18:2-3. "Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons." The betrayer knew the place of prayer — familiarity guided the arrest.
Matthew 26:48-50. "Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: 'The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.' Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, 'Greetings, Rabbi!' and kissed him. Jesus replied, 'Do what you came for, friend.' Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him." Signal-kiss and "friend" in the same moment — Jesus names the wound without denying the friendship word.
2 Samuel 15:10-12. "Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, 'As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, say, "Absalom is king in Hebron."' Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter. While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, to come from his hometown of Giloh. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom's following kept on increasing." Conspiracy from a son's house and a counselor's turn — betrayal can start inside the household. See Bible verses about strength.
Proverbs 27:6. "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." True friend-wounds differ from kiss-heavy enmity — discernment after betrayal starts here. See Bible verses about faith.
Matthew 27:3-4. "When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 'I have sinned,' he said, 'for I have betrayed innocent blood.' 'What is that to us?' they replied. 'That's your responsibility!'" Remorse after paradidomi is real — innocent blood is named; the buyers wash their hands of him. How to use these verses
Pick one verse for prayer after a hand-over, a card for someone betrayed by a friend, or teaching that Jesus entered Judas-shaped wounds — not twelve as a quick fix. Psalm 41:9 (close friend turned), Matthew 26:14-16 (Judas bargains to hand him over), and Luke 22:48 (betraying with a kiss) are clear starting places.
What does Jesus say about betrayal?
Jesus named it openly: "one of you is going to betray me" (John 13:21). When Judas came, he still said "Do what you came for, friend" (Matthew 26:50). What does the Bible say about betrayal by a spouse?
Malachi 2:14 says the Lord is "the witness between you and the wife of your youth" and calls breaking faith with a marriage partner unfaithfulness to the covenant. Psalm 34:18 is a starting place for the one who was hurt. For more on marriage, see Bible verses about marriage.
How do Bible verses about betrayal differ from forgiveness verses?
Forgiveness pages center releasing another's sin and receiving mercy; a betrayal page focuses being handed over by someone near — the Judas-shaped wound. Cross-link Bible verses about forgiveness.
