"built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone."
— Ephesians 2:20 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about the cornerstone want Scripture on Christ as the chief corner stone of God's household — not only the broader Jesus list, the cross inventory, or the living stone house-building list alone. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about Jesus, Bible verses about the cross, Bible verses about the living stone, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about salvation, Bible verses about the church, and Bible verse of the day. Cornerstone here means Greek akrogōniaios / Hebrew pinnāh — the chief stone that aligns the building — distinct from Jesus-as-person inventory alone, the-cross inventory alone, or living-stones-as-believers inventory alone. For Old Testament promises of the Messiah and how Jesus fulfilled them, see Bible verses about the Messiah. Scripture also calls this stone chosen and precious: precious cornerstone.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "cornerstone" is ἀκρογωνιαῖος akrogōniaios (Strong's G204; Bible Hub G204) — belonging to the extreme corner, the chief corner stone. In Hebrew, פִּנָּה pinnāh (Strong's H6438; Bible Hub H6438) names a corner or pinnacle. Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22 feed the New Testament's claim that Christ is the rejected-yet-chosen corner stone.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Ephesians 2 presses that believers are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone (Bible Hub MHC Ephesians 2; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Ephesians 2). Isaiah 28 presses the sure foundation stone laid in Zion (Bible Hub MHC Isaiah 28; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Isaiah 28). (Jesus, the-cross, and living-stone lists live on those pages; this list centers the cornerstone.)

What does cornerstone mean in the Bible?
In ancient building, the cornerstone was the first stone set at the corner of the foundation. Every other stone was lined up from it, so if it was off, the whole building was off. Isaiah 28:16 promises "a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation" in Zion, and Psalm 118:22 says "the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone."
The New Testament applies both lines to Jesus. He quotes Psalm 118 about himself (Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17), Peter preaches it in Acts 4:11, and Paul writes that the church is built "with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone" (Ephesians 2:20). In the King James Version that verse reads "Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone." First Peter 2:6-7 brings Isaiah and the Psalm together.

Questions people ask
What does it mean that Jesus is the chief cornerstone?
It means the church is lined up on him. Everything believers hold is measured from Christ, the way a building is squared from its first corner stone (Ephesians 2:19-22).
Where does the Bible call Jesus the cornerstone?
Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 28:16 first speak of the stone. Jesus applies it to himself in Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10, and Luke 20:17; Peter in Acts 4:11 and 1 Peter 2:6-7; and Paul in Ephesians 2:20.
What is a good Bible verse about the cornerstone?
Ephesians 2:20 (Christ the chief cornerstone), Isaiah 28:16 (precious cornerstone in Zion), and Psalm 118:22 (the rejected stone) are clear starting places.
How do Bible verses about the cornerstone differ from Jesus, the cross, or the living stone?
The Jesus page centers who he is. The cross page centers the death that saves. The living-stone page centers believers built into a spiritual house (and Christ as the living stone in 1 Peter 2:4). This page centers the chief corner stone that aligns the whole building — then cross-links those companions. See Bible verses about Jesus. The chief cornerstone title in Ephesians 2:20 is on Bible verses about Chief Cornerstone.
What does akrogōniaios mean?
Greek akrogōniaios (G204) means the chief corner stone — the extreme-corner stone that sets the lines of the building. Hebrew pinnāh (H6438) names a corner or pinnacle in the same image.
Why do the Gospels quote Psalm 118 about the cornerstone?
Jesus applies the rejected stone to himself; Acts and 1 Peter press the same line for the church's confession. See Bible verses about hope.
Where can I read more about Jesus, the cross, and living stones?
Start with Bible verses about Jesus, then Bible verses about the cross, Bible verses about the living stone, and Bible verses about the church.
