"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"
— 1 Corinthians 15:55 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about death want Scripture that names dying honestly and answers with Christ's victory — not only the mourning frame of grief or the consolation frame of comfort. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about grief, Bible verses about comfort, Bible verses about healing, Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about encouragement, Bible verses about love, and Bible verses for hard times. Death here means thanatos frank naming of dying and Christ's triumph over it — distinct from grief-as-mourning and from comfort-as-consolation alone. For Scripture on final judgment and the second death, see Bible verses about hell.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "death" is θάνατος thanatos (Strong's G2288; Bible Hub G2288) — death, the state of dying, or the power of death. Scripture does not flinch from naming death; it also announces that Christ abolished death's final claim and that those who belong to him live and die unto the Lord.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on 1 Corinthians 15 presses that death's sting is answered in Christ's resurrection victory — the taunt is faith's song, not denial (Bible Hub commentaries on 1 Corinthians 15:55; Bible Hub MHC 1 Corinthians 15; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on 1 Corinthians 15). On Psalm 116 he marks that precious in the Lord's sight is the death of his faithful ones (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalms 116:15; Bible Hub MHC Psalms 116). On Romans 14 he notes that whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (Bible Hub commentaries on Romans 14:8; Bible Hub MHC Romans 14). On Philippians 1 he marks Paul's "to die is gain" as Christ-centered, not death-romanticizing (Bible Hub commentaries on Philippians 1:21; Bible Hub MHC Philippians 1).

12 Bible verses about death
1 Corinthians 15:55. "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" Death is addressed and defied — Christ's resurrection empties the taunt. See Bible verses about hope.
Psalm 23:4. "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." The valley is walked with God present — not alone. See Bible verses about comfort for consolation neighbors; this page keeps the valley-of-death frame.
Romans 14:8. "If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord." Belonging covers both living and dying — death does not cancel ownership. See Bible verses about love.
Philippians 1:21. "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Life and death are both Christ-framed — gain is not escapism. See Bible verses about faith.
Revelation 14:13. "Then I heard a voice from heaven say, 'Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.'" Dying in the Lord is called blessed — rest follows the labor. See Bible verses about faith. (Neighbor grief lists John 11:35; this page does not reuse John 11:25-26.)
Psalm 116:15. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants." Faithful death is precious to the Lord — not ignored. See Bible verses about encouragement.
2 Timothy 1:10. "but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." Christ destroyed death and brought life to light — gospel news, not private theory. See Bible verses about hope.
Hebrews 2:14-15. "Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death." Christ's death breaks death's power and frees from lifelong fear. See Bible verses about freedom (same PR), Bible verses about courage, and Bible verses about faith.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die…" Death sits inside God's timed seasons — not outside his frame. See Bible verses about trust.
Revelation 1:18. "I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." The Living One holds the keys — death is not masterless. See Bible verses about hope.
Isaiah 25:8. "he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people's disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken." Death swallowed forever is the promise — tears wiped, disgrace removed. See Bible verses about hope. (Prefer this over Revelation 21:4, which grief already lists.)
Romans 6:23. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Death as wage and life as gift name the gospel contrast. See Bible verses about forgiveness and Love and forgiveness.
What does the Bible say about death?
Scripture is honest about death and clear about what Christ has done to it. A few truths come up again and again.
- Death comes to everyone. "Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). There is "a time to be born and a time to die" (Ecclesiastes 3:2).
- Death is not the end for those who trust Christ. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die" (John 11:25-26).
- Christ has beaten death. He "has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:10). That is why Paul can ask, "Where, O death, is your sting?" (1 Corinthians 15:55).
- For believers, dying means being with the Lord. Paul says he would "prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8), and "to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).
- One day death will be gone. "There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
