"My beloved is mine and I am his."
— Song of Solomon 2:16 (NIV)
Engagement Bible verses are readings for a promise spoken before the wedding: a proposal, a family table, or a short gathering that is not yet the ceremony. Bible verses for engagement, and Bible verses for an engagement, are that same list. They are not the marriage vows, and they are not one verse explained at length. The groups below follow how people use them: a promise named out loud, the love that promise is asking for, two people before the vows, and a blessing on what has not happened yet. Each entry has a short quotation from the NIV, one sentence of context, and a link when this site has a page that stays with that verse.
Readings for the ceremony itself are Wedding Bible verses. Verses about what marriage is, beyond this promise, are Bible verses about marriage. The direct answer is What does the Bible say about marriage. The covenant the promise is for is Love and marriage. A promise kept when feelings move is Love and commitment. Readings for the years after the wedding are Anniversary Bible verses.

A promise spoken
Song of Solomon 2:16. "My beloved is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies." The woman in the poem states a mutual claim. Couples read the first line when an engagement is that claim said in public, before the wedding makes it a vow.
Song of Solomon 8:6. "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death." She asks to be worn as a seal, close and public. An engagement reads it as the promise moving toward that seal. The ceremony use of the same line is Wedding Bible verses. The page for the verse is Song of Solomon 8:6 meaning.
Song of Solomon 8:7. "Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away." The next line of the poem. The portrait of verses 6 and 7 together is Bible verses on true love.
Ruth 1:16. "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God." Ruth says this to Naomi, not to a husband. People read it at an engagement when the promise is to go, to stay, and to take the other person's people and God. It is not a proposal verse in the story itself. Love and loyalty is the study of that kind of staying.
Love the promise is asking for
1 Corinthians 13:4-7. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud." Paul is telling a church how love treats people. An engagement reads it as the love the promise is asking both people to practice, not as a feeling that arrived with the ring. The longer study of these four verses is the 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 deep dive.
1 Corinthians 13:7. "It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." This is love's endurance. It is not a command to ignore harm or to marry in a hurry.
Colossians 3:14. "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." Paul has just named compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Love is what holds them. An engagement can name those virtues before it names a date.
1 John 4:19. "We love because he first loved us." The love spoken in a proposal starts, in this verse, as a response to love already given. The chapter's claim that God is love is 1 John 4:8 meaning.
Two people, before the vows
Ecclesiastes 4:9. "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor." The Teacher is talking about work, falling down, and staying warm, not about a wedding. Couples read it when the engagement is a decision to face ordinary life as two.
Ecclesiastes 4:12. "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." The passage says two are better than one. It does not name an engagement. People read the third strand when they want the promise held by more than the two of them. The covenant that cord is often asked to mean is Love and marriage.
Genesis 2:18. "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." God speaks this before marriage exists in the story. An engagement can hear it as God's account of companionship. It is not yet the one-flesh line. That line is Genesis 2:24, and it belongs to the wedding and to Bible verses about marriage.
Proverbs 18:22. "He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD." The proverb calls a wife a good gift. An engagement has not yet become that marriage. The list of what the covenant is, once it is a covenant, is Bible verses about marriage.
Proverbs 3:5-6. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This is wisdom for a decision, including the decision to promise marriage. It does not name a ring, and it does not replace counsel, family, or time.
A blessing on the promise
Numbers 6:24-26. "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace." This is the blessing Aaron and his sons were to put on Israel. An engagement uses it to ask that same keeping and peace over a promise that is not yet a wedding.
Psalm 127:1. "Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain." The reading asks that God build the household the couple does not have yet. The ceremony list that also uses this line is Wedding Bible verses.
Ephesians 5:25. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her." Paul is writing to husbands about marriage, not about the season before it. An engagement reads it as the measure the promise is moving toward: Christ's self-giving, not a feeling that arrives and leaves. The chapter is Love in marriage: Ephesians 5.
A wider list of love verses, beyond this promise, is Bible verses about love. The question those verses answer is What does the Bible say about love. Desire honored before marriage, without turning the engagement into the wedding, is Love and romantic relationships.
Questions people ask
What are good engagement Bible verses?
Start with Song of Solomon 2:16, Song of Solomon 8:6, 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, and Numbers 6:24-26. The sections above group those readings by how a proposal or a small gathering uses them. Each line is a short NIV quotation, with a link when this site has a page that stays with that verse.
What are Bible verses for engagement?
Bible verses for engagement are readings for a promise that is not yet the wedding: a mutual claim, love that patient and kind, two people who are better together, and a blessing asked from God. This page is that list. The ceremony list is Wedding Bible verses.
What are Bible verses for an engagement?
Bible verses for an engagement are the same readings, chosen for the night a couple tells their people or for the words one person speaks when asking. Song of Solomon 2:16 states the claim. Numbers 6:24-26 asks God to keep them. Neither line is a wedding vow.
What Bible verse can be read when proposing?
Song of Solomon 2:16 is the short mutual claim: "My beloved is mine and I am his." Song of Solomon 8:6 asks to be set as a seal. Ruth 1:16 is often read, and it helps to say what it is: Ruth speaking to Naomi, a promise to go and to stay, not a proposal in the story. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 can follow if the proposal wants to name how love treats a person.
Is Song of Solomon 8:6 an engagement verse?
It can be, when the couple means the seal they are promising to wear: an exclusive claim, close and public. The speaker is the woman in the poem. The wedding page keeps the ceremony use of the same line. The verse page is Song of Solomon 8:6 meaning.
Which verses belong to the wedding, not the engagement?
Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:6, and Ephesians 5:25 belong to the marriage itself: one flesh, what God has joined, and a husband's love measured by Christ. An engagement can look toward them. It should not speak as if the vow has already been made. Those readings are gathered in Wedding Bible verses and Bible verses about marriage.
What blessing can be read at an engagement?
Numbers 6:24-26 asks the LORD to bless and keep them, to make his face shine on them, and to give them peace. Psalm 127:1 says that unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Neither verse creates a marriage. Both are a request over a promise.
