"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh."
— Genesis 2:24 (NIV)
The Bible says marriage is a covenant: a man leaves his father and mother, is united to his wife, and the two become one flesh. Jesus says the Creator made them male and female, and that what God has joined together, let no one separate. Paul says a husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, and that a wife is to submit to her own husband and respect him. A grouped list of the verses, one line at a time, is Bible verses about marriage. This page is the answer. The wider answer, covering neighbor, friend, and family as well as a spouse, is What does the Bible say about relationships.

What marriage is
Marriage in Scripture is a leaving and a joining. Genesis 2:18 says it is not good for the man to be alone, and that God would make a helper suitable for him. Genesis 2:24 then names the shape of that help: "That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh." The new household is one flesh. It is not two people who keep a separate life and share a house.
Jesus quotes that line when he is asked about divorce. Matthew 19:4-6 records the answer: at the beginning the Creator "made them male and female," and "a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." Then he says, "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." The joining is God's. The two are no longer two. Other people are not to pull the marriage apart.
Malachi names the same bond as a covenant with a witness. "It is because the LORD is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant" (Malachi 2:14). She is a partner, and the LORD stands between them. Unfaithfulness is a break of that witness.
Paul sets the one-flesh line inside Christ and the church. "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church" (Ephesians 5:31-32). The marriage is real on its own terms. It also points past itself. The chapter study of that love is Love in marriage: Ephesians 5. The covenant study is Love and marriage.
Love inside marriage
The love a husband owes is measured by Christ, not by a feeling that comes and goes. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25). A few verses later Paul says husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies: "He who loves his wife loves himself" (Ephesians 5:28). Colossians 3:19 is shorter and just as plain: "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them."
The love chapter describes how that love treats a person. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Paul wrote it to a church. A marriage needs the same treatment. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 meaning stays with those four verses. The chapter is 1 Corinthians 13.
Song of Solomon 8:6 is the woman asking to be worn as a seal: "Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death." The claim is exclusive, close, and public. Song of Solomon 8:6 meaning stays with the seal. The wider answer, God's love and love for a neighbor as well as this covenant, is What does the Bible say about love. The verse list beyond marriage is Bible verses about love.
Faithfulness
Faithfulness is the covenant kept with the same person. Malachi 2:14 calls her the wife of your youth and the wife of your marriage covenant, and charges unfaithfulness against the husband who left that bond. Proverbs 5:18 tells him where delight belongs: "May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth." The proverb does not send him looking for another.
Hebrews 13:4 honors the marriage and the bed that belongs to it: "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." The closeness that covenant is for is Love and intimacy. The promise that stays when feelings move is Love and commitment.
Proverbs 3:3 says, "Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart." Song of Solomon 8:7 follows the seal with a love trouble cannot put out: "Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away." Years already lived with that faithfulness have their own readings in Anniversary Bible verses.
Husbands and wives
Ephesians 5 does not leave the roles unnamed. It opens the household with a mutual word, then gives each spouse a command.
"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5:21). Then: "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything" (Ephesians 5:22-24).
The next command is the husband's, and it is not a softer version of the same sentence. "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25). Paul closes the passage with both sides still in place: "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband" (Ephesians 5:33).
Colossians says the same pair without the long picture of Christ and the church. "Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them" (Colossians 3:18-19). Submission is "as is fitting in the Lord." Love includes the refusal to be harsh.
Headship in Ephesians 5 is real. Paul says the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. The pattern he gives for that headship is Christ, who loved the church and gave himself up for her, who feeds and cares for his body. It is not a license to dominate, and the text does not erase the wife's submission in order to say so. Love in marriage: Ephesians 5 stays with the husband's love beside Christ's.
Peter speaks to husbands in the same household teaching. "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers" (1 Peter 3:7). They are heirs together. A husband's prayers are hindered when that respect is missing.
What marriage is not
Marriage is not a private arrangement two people keep until the feeling leaves. Jesus says what God has joined together, let no one separate (Matthew 19:6). When he is asked about the certificate of divorce, he says Moses permitted it because their hearts were hard, "but it was not this way from the beginning" (Matthew 19:8). He then says, "I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery" (Matthew 19:9). The covenant study that stays with that hardness of heart is Love and marriage.
Marriage is not harshness with a vow attached. Colossians 3:19 forbids it in one line. It is not a cover for harm. Ephesians 5 measures a husband's love by Christ giving himself up, and 1 Corinthians 13:7 says love "always protects." 1 Corinthians 13:7 meaning says that line does not mean hiding harm or staying where you are unsafe. Protection includes getting to safety. This page does not turn that limit into a separate article.
