Bible Verses About the Way, the Truth, and the Life: 12 Scriptures on John 14:6

What Jesus meant by "I am the way, the truth, and the life" and the verses that echo it.

A traveler helps a companion back to their feet on a rocky path.

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

— John 14:6 (NIV)

People who search bible verses about the way, the truth, and the life want Scripture on Jesus' John 14:6 I Am claim — not only the Jesus identity inventory, the eternal life gift list, or the following Jesus call list alone. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about Jesus, Bible verses about eternal life, Bible verses about following Jesus, Bible verses about discipleship, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about salvation, and Bible verse of the day. Way, truth, and life here means hodos, alētheia, and zōē — the one path to the Father — distinct from Jesus-as-inventory alone, eternal-life-as-gift list alone, or following-as-call list alone.

Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "way" is ὁδός hodos (Strong's G3598; Bible Hub G3598) — a road, path, or journey. "Truth" is ἀλήθεια alētheia (Strong's G225; Bible Hub G225) — truth, reality, what is true. "Life" is ζωή zōē (Strong's G2222; Bible Hub G2222) — life, especially life that God gives. John 14:6 joins all three in one I Am claim; Acts later calls the Christian movement "the Way."

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on John 14 presses that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life — and that no one comes to the Father except through him (Bible Hub MHC John 14; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on John 14). (Jesus, eternal-life, and following-Jesus lists live on those pages; this list centers hodos / alētheia / zōē as the John 14:6 claim.)

What does John 14:6 mean?

John 14 is the night before the cross. Jesus is comforting the disciples. In John 14:1-3 he says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me," and he tells them he is going to prepare a place for them in his Father's house. Thomas then asks, in John 14:5, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" John 14:6 is the answer: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

"The way" is Jesus himself, the path to the Father. He does not send Thomas looking for a different road. He says no one comes to the Father except through him. "The truth" is also Jesus himself. John 8:32, listed below, says that knowing the truth sets a person free. 1 John 5:20 says the Son of God has come and given understanding, "so that we may know him who is true." "The life" is the life that is in him. Psalm 16:11 prays, "You make known to me the path of life."

John 14:6 sits with the other "I am" sayings in this Gospel. John 10:9 calls him the gate. John 11:25 calls him the resurrection and the life. John 14:6 uses that same "I am" pattern to answer Thomas and the disciples with him that night: the way, the truth, and the life.

John 14:6 is the lead verse. Acts 9:2 and Acts 24:14 show the early church called the faith "the Way." John 8:32 pairs truth with freedom.

How do Bible verses about way, truth, and life differ from Jesus, eternal life, or following Jesus?

The Jesus page inventories who he is. Eternal life centers the gift and knowing you have it. Following Jesus centers the call to walk after him. This page centers John 14:6 — hodos, alētheia, zōē as the one path to the Father — then cross-links those companions. See Bible verses about Jesus.

What do hodos, alētheia, and zōē mean?

Greek hodos (G3598) means way or path. Alētheia (G225) means truth. Zōē (G2222) means life. John 14:6 joins all three in Christ.

Does "no one comes to the Father except through me" mean Jesus is exclusive?

John 14:6 states that access to the Father is through the Son. The claim is particular, not vague spirituality. See Bible verses about salvation.

Where can I read more about Jesus, eternal life, and following him?

Start with Bible verses about Jesus, then Bible verses about eternal life, Bible verses about following Jesus, and Bible verses about discipleship.

What does 'I am the way, the truth, and the life' mean?

In John 14:6 Jesus answers Thomas. He says he is the way and the truth and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him. "The way" is the path to the Father. "The truth" is a person: John 8:32 says knowing the truth sets a person free, and 1 John 5:20 says the Son gives understanding so that we may know him who is true. "The life" is the life God gives in him, the path of life in Psalm 16:11. The sentence is his reply the night before the cross, not a general slogan.

Who was Jesus talking to in John 14:6?

John 14:1-6 is Jesus speaking with his disciples. He tells them not to let their hearts be troubled (John 14:1). Thomas is the one who asks how they can know the way (John 14:5). John 14:6 answers Thomas, in that conversation with the disciples, the night before the cross. The passage names Thomas. It does not name anyone else in the room.
