"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding."
— Proverbs 9:10 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about wisdom want Scripture for skill in living before God — not clever talk, decisions that start with reverence, and love that refuses foolish shortcuts. This page is a numbered list of fifteen passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and wisdom. Related lists: Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about strength, Bible verses about hope, and Bible verses about God's love. Wisdom here is godly understanding — distinct from the endurance and power language in Bible verses about strength. For chokmah and sophia as God's own wisdom, see Bible verses about the wisdom of God. The wise listen before they speak; see listening.
Word study (lead verse). In Proverbs 9:10 the key word is chokmah — wisdom / skill — from Hebrew חָכְמָה (Strong's H2451): practical insight that begins with the fear of the Lord, not mere information. See also Bible Hub H2451. In the New Testament the cousin word is often sophia (Strong's G4678; Bible Hub G4678).
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Proverbs 9 presses true wisdom as religion's path: "There is no true wisdom but in the way of religion, no true life but in the end of that way" (Bible Hub commentaries on Proverbs 9:10; fuller MHC on the chapter at Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Proverbs 9 and Bible Hub MHC Proverbs 9).

What Does the Bible Say About Wisdom?
Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 9:10 makes reverence the starting line, before any skill in living. Job 28:28 and Proverbs 1:7 say the same thing another way: wisdom and knowledge belong with turning from evil and receiving instruction.
God gives wisdom generously to those who ask. James 1:5 is the invitation to ask God, who gives to all without finding fault. Proverbs 2:6 and Daniel 2:20-21 name the same giver. Wisdom is received from the Lord, not invented by a clever mind.
Wisdom from above is pure and peaceable. James 3:17 describes it as pure first, then peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy and good fruit. Godly wisdom has a character. It is more than a sharp mind.
Wisdom is not the same as knowledge. Knowledge can name what is true. Wisdom knows how to live it before God, and how to use what you know well. Ecclesiastes 7:12 says wisdom preserves the person who has it, and 1 Corinthians 13:2 says knowledge without love is empty.

Questions people ask
What is a good Bible verse about wisdom?
Proverbs 9:10 (fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom) and James 1:5 (ask God, who gives generously) are clear starting places. Proverbs 4:7 presses getting wisdom even when it costs.
What does the Bible say about godly wisdom?
Scripture says wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10; Job 28:28), is given by God (Proverbs 2:6; James 1:5), and shows itself in pure, peace-loving character (James 3:17). See Love and wisdom.
How is wisdom different from strength?
They overlap in passages like 1 Corinthians 1:25. Wisdom stresses skill and insight for living before God; strength stresses power, endurance, and help in weakness. Link both: Bible verses about strength.
What Bible verse helps when I need to make a decision?
James 1:5, Proverbs 3:13-14, and Proverbs 2:6 are often used. Ask God; treasure wisdom; listen to his word. See Bible verses about faith.
How do I ask God for wisdom?
Ask him directly. James 1:5 says God gives wisdom generously and without finding fault. Ask with the reverence Proverbs 9:10 calls the beginning of wisdom, then do the instruction his word already gives (Proverbs 2:6).
What is the difference between wisdom and knowledge?
Knowledge is grasping what is true. Wisdom is skill in living it before God. Proverbs 1:7 ties the fear of the Lord to the beginning of knowledge, and Proverbs 9:10 calls that fear the beginning of wisdom. Knowledge still needs wisdom to be used well. 1 Corinthians 13:2 says knowledge without love comes to nothing.
What is godly wisdom vs worldly wisdom?
Godly wisdom comes from God, begins with the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 9:10; Job 28:28), and shows itself as pure and peaceable (James 3:17). Worldly wisdom trusts human cleverness. 1 Corinthians 1:25 sets God's wisdom above that kind of cleverness.
