"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
— Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about speech want Scripture for the tongue and words — how talk builds or burns. This page is a numbered list of fourteen passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and speech. Related lists: Bible verses about truth, Love and honesty, Bible verses about kindness, Bible verses about wisdom, and Bible verses about anger. Speech here is tongue-and-words practice — distinct from the truth-doctrine list and the honesty-character essay. Talebearing and whispering that split friends are Bible verses about gossip.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "tongue" is often γλῶσσα glōssa (Strong's G1100; Bible Hub G1100) — the tongue as organ of speech, and by extension language. James treats it as a small member that sets great fires. Healthy speech is measured by whether it builds up and gives grace.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on James 3 presses that the tongue is hard to tame and that blessing God while cursing people made in his likeness is a contradiction (Bible Hub commentaries on James 3:5; Bible Hub MHC James 3; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on James 3). On Ephesians 4 he ties speech to building others and not grieving the Spirit (Bible Hub commentaries on Ephesians 4:29; Bible Hub MHC Ephesians 4). On Proverbs 18 he notes life and death in the power of the tongue (Bible Hub commentaries on Proverbs 18:21; Bible Hub MHC Proverbs 18).

14 Bible verses about speech
Ephesians 4:29. "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Speech is filtered by build-up and benefit. See Love and speech.
James 3:8. "but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison." No one tames the tongue by willpower alone. It needs a guard.
James 3:9-10. "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be." Worship and contempt cannot share one mouth cleanly.
Proverbs 18:21. "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Words harvest — life-fruit or death-fruit.
Proverbs 15:28. "The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil." Weigh the answer before the mouth opens. See Bible verses about anger and Bible verses about gentleness.
Proverbs 10:19. "Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues." More words are not the same as more wisdom. See Bible verses about wisdom.
Proverbs 21:23. "Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity." Guarding speech is self-protection, not only politeness.
Proverbs 13:3. "Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin." Rash speech runs toward ruin. A guarded mouth preserves a life. See Bible verses about wisdom.
Matthew 12:36-37. "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." Empty words still face account.
Psalm 19:14. "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Speech prayer starts with pleasing God. See Bible verses about prayer.
Psalm 141:3. "Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips." Ask God to gate the doorway before words leave.
Ecclesiastes 5:2. "Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few." Fewer words can be wiser worship.
1 Peter 3:10. "For, 'Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.'" Life and good days track with tongue restraint. See Love and honesty and Bible verses about truth.
Proverbs 17:27. "The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered." Knowledge shows up as restrained words. See Bible verses about kindness.
