"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
— Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about sleep want Scripture for night sleep, lying down in peace, and the gift of restful sleep — not only the Sabbath / soul-rest focus of rest. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about rest, Bible verses about peace, Bible verses about comfort, Bible verses about anxiety, Bible verses about fear, and Bible verse of the day. Sleep here means hypnos / yashen — night sleep and sleep in peace — distinct from Sabbath-ceasing and soul-rest alone.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "sleep" is often ὕπνος hypnos (Strong's G5258; Bible Hub G5258) — sleep, slumber. In Hebrew, יָשֵׁן yashen (Strong's H3462; Bible Hub H3462) means to sleep or be asleep. Scripture treats sleep as gift and trust — and God as the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps while you do.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Psalm 4 presses lying down in peace: safety is from the Lord alone, so sleep can be an act of trust (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalm 4:8; Bible Hub MHC Psalm 4; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Psalm 4). On Proverbs 3 he marks sweet sleep for those who walk in wisdom — lie down without fear (Bible Hub commentaries on Proverbs 3:24; Bible Hub MHC Proverbs 3; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Proverbs 3).

What does the Bible say about sleep?
The Bible treats sleep as a gift from God, not a reward you earn by working late. "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves" (Psalm 127:2). Lying down is also an act of trust: you can sleep because the Lord keeps watch, and "he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:4).
Scripture is honest about sleepless nights too. King Darius "could not sleep" the night Daniel was in the lions' den (Daniel 6:18), and King Xerxes "could not sleep" the night the story of Esther turned (Esther 6:1). It also warns against loving sleep more than work: "Do not love sleep or you will grow poor" (Proverbs 20:13). And the New Testament uses sleep as a gentle word for the death of believers who will rise again (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14). The twelve verses below focus on the first theme, sleeping in peace.
12 Bible verses about sleep
Psalm 4:8. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Sleep can be peace practiced — safety is the Lord's, not the locked door alone. See Bible verses about peace.
Proverbs 3:24. "When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet." Wisdom's path includes sweet sleep — fear does not have to own the pillow. See Bible verses about fear.
Psalm 3:5. "I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me." Lying down and waking are both held by the Lord — sustain is the middle word. See Bible verses about anxiety.
Ecclesiastes 5:12. "The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep." Sweet sleep belongs to honest work more than to anxious abundance. See Bible verses about work.
Psalm 121:3-4. "He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." You sleep; he does not — watchfulness is his, not yours all night. See Bible verses about comfort.
Job 11:18-19. "You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid…" Hope and safety make lying down possible again. See Bible verses about hope.
Mark 4:38. "Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?'" Even in a storm, Jesus slept — trust can look like a cushion in the stern. See Bible verses about faith.
Acts 12:6. "The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance." Chained and still sleeping — peace that does not wait for perfect circumstances. See Bible verses about peace.
Genesis 28:11. "When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep." Jacob sleeps on a stone and meets God in a dream — ordinary night sleep can open heaven. See Bible verses about gods-presence.
Psalm 139:18. "…were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you." Waking finds God still there — sleep did not drop you from his care. See Bible verses about gods-presence.
Jeremiah 31:26. "At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been pleasant to me." Pleasant sleep after a word of hope — God can make the night kind again. See Bible verses about comfort.
1 Kings 19:5. "Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, 'Get up and eat.'" Exhausted Elijah sleeps first — then food, then the next step. See Bible verses about rest.
How to use these verses
Pick one verse for a restless night, a fearful pillow, or a season when sleep feels unsafe — not twelve as a sleep-hygiene exam. If you need peace-at-bedtime language, start with Psalm 4:8 or Proverbs 3:24. If you need Sabbath / soul-rest language, open Bible verses about rest. If worry keeps you awake, open Bible verses about anxiety or Bible verses about fear. For a daily verse, open Bible verse of the day.
