"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about rest want Scripture for burnout, sleepless weeks, and the guilt of stopping. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and rest. Related lists: Bible verses about peace, Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about work, and Bible verses about money. Rest here is Sabbath-stopping and soul-rest in Christ — distinct from the labor focus in Bible verses about work and the peace-as-shalom focus in Bible verses about peace.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, Jesus' gift of rest uses ἀνάπαυσις anapausis (Strong's G372) — rest, cessation, refreshment. See also Bible Hub G372. In Hebrew, נוּחַ nuach (Strong's H5117; Bible Hub H5117) means to rest, settle, or cause to rest — the root behind Sabbath's settled quiet.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Matthew 11 opens the invitation wide: "Our Saviour has invited all that labour and are heavy-laden, to come unto him… Christ invites all to come to him for rest to their souls" (Bible Hub commentaries on Matthew 11:28; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC Matthew 11). On Psalm 23 he names green pastures and still waters as the Shepherd's care (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalm 23:2; Bible Hub MHC Psalm 23).

12 Bible verses about rest
Matthew 11:28-29. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Rest is Christ's gift — and it comes with his yoke, not with empty idleness. See Love and rest. The reference page is Matthew 11:28.
Psalm 23:2. "He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters." The Shepherd makes the sheep lie down — rest is led, not only earned. See Bible verses about God's love.
Exodus 20:8-11. "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy… For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth… but he rested on the seventh day…" Rest is commanded because God rested — stopping is imitation, not laziness. See Bible verses about work.
Hebrews 4:9-11. "There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest…" Sabbath-rest remains — effort goes into entering rest, not into endless proving.
Psalm 46:10. "He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God…'" Stillness is how we know who God is when striving has been loud.
Mark 6:31. "Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, 'Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'" Jesus schedules rest for tired disciples in a busy season.
Isaiah 40:29-31. "He gives strength to the weary… but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Hope renews strength for the long walk. See Bible verses about hope and Bible verses about strength.
Psalm 127:2. "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves." Late toil can be vanity when God means to give sleep. See Bible verses about money.
Exodus 33:14. "The Lord replied, 'My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'" Rest travels with God's presence, not only with a cleared calendar.
Psalm 4:8. "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety." Sleep can be an act of trust. See Bible verses about peace.
Jeremiah 6:16. "This is what the Lord says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls…'" Rest for the soul sits on the good way — walking, not wandering.
Genesis 2:2-3. "By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy…" God finished, then rested — and blessed the rest. See Love and rest and Bible verses about worship.
