"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
— Romans 5:3-4 (NIV)
People who search scriptures on endurance or Bible verses about strength and endurance want Scripture for staying power under trial and suffering — not only the perseverance list of keeping on to the finish, the strength list of God-given might, or the hope list of confident expectation alone. Related essay: Love and endurance. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about perseverance, Bible verses about strength, Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about patience, Love and endurance, and Bible verse of the day. Endurance here means hypomonē — remaining under pressure without quitting — distinct from finish-line perseverance language alone and from raw strength alone. For strength to run and not grow weary, see Isaiah 40:31.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "endurance" / "perseverance" is often ὑπομονή hypomonē (Strong's G5281; Bible Hub G5281) — a remaining under, steadfastness, patient endurance. The verb ὑπομένω hypomenō (Strong's G5278; Bible Hub G5278) means to remain under, bear up, endure. Biblical endurance is not stoic numbness — it is faithful staying under trial with hope ahead.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Romans 5 traces the chain: tribulation works patience, and patience experience, and experience hope (Bible Hub commentaries on Romans 5:3; Bible Hub MHC Romans 5; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Romans 5). On Hebrews 12 he urges running with patience the race set before us, looking to Jesus (Bible Hub commentaries on Hebrews 12:1; Bible Hub MHC Hebrews 12; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Hebrews 12). (Perseverance-finish and strength-might lists live on those pages; this list centers staying power under suffering.)

What does the Bible say about endurance?
Scripture treats endurance as something God grows in people through trials, not something they manufacture alone.
- Trials grow it. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance" (James 1:2-3).
- God supplies the strength. Paul prays that believers be "strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience" (Colossians 1:11).
- God makes a way to endure. "When you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13).
- It looks to Jesus. "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:1-2).
- It has a promise at the end. "You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised" (Hebrews 10:36).
