"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear."
— 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about temptation want Scripture for the pull toward sin — not a trap with no exit, and not a private shame nobody else faces. This page is a numbered list of fifteen passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and temptation. Related lists: Bible verses about self-control, Bible verses about faithfulness, Bible verses about prayer, Bible verses about forgiveness, and Bible verses about strength. Temptation here is the test or enticement toward sin — distinct from settled sin itself, and from the self-mastery theme in Bible verses about self-control. The clean-heart path is Bible verses about purity. Samson's story shows how small compromises open the door to a fall. See Bible verses about Samson.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "temptation" is often πειρασμός peirasmos (Strong's G3986) — a trial, proving, or temptation that can refine or entice. See also Bible Hub G3986. In Hebrew, נָסָה nasah (Strong's H5254; Bible Hub H5254) means to test, try, or prove — including tests of faith and the dangerous testing of God.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on 1 Corinthians 10:13 comforts without excusing: "Others have the like burdens, and the like temptations: what they bear up under, and break through, we may also. God is wise as well as faithful, and will make our burdens according to our strength. He knows what we can bear. He will make a way to escape; he will deliver either from the trial itself, or at least the mischief of it" (Bible Hub commentaries on 1 Corinthians 10:13; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC 1 Corinthians 10). On Matthew 4:1-11 he notes the timing of Jesus' wilderness trial: "Concerning Christ's temptation, observe, that directly after he was declared to be the Son of God, and the Saviour of the world, he was tempted; great privileges, and special tokens of Divine favour, will not secure any from being tempted" (Bible Hub commentaries on Matthew 4:1; Bible Hub MHC Matthew 4).

15 Bible verses about temptation
1 Corinthians 10:13. "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." Temptation is common; God is faithful; a way out exists. See Love and temptation.
Matthew 26:41. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Watching and praying are the twin guards. See Bible verses about prayer.
James 1:13-14. "When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed." God does not author evil enticement; desire does the dragging.
Hebrews 4:15. "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin." Jesus knows the pressure without sharing the fall. See Bible verses about compassion.
Matthew 6:13. "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Prayer asks for deliverance before the trap closes. See Bible verses about prayer.
1 Peter 5:8-9. "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…" Temptation has an adversary; resistance stands in faith. See Bible verses about faith.
Galatians 6:1. "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted." Restoration work needs self-watch. See Bible verses about forgiveness.
Matthew 4:1. "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." Even the Son faced a wilderness trial after the Father's favor was named.
2 Timothy 2:22. "Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." Sometimes the way out is fleeing, then pursuing better company. See Bible verses about self-control.
James 4:7. "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Submission to God and resistance to the devil belong together.
Proverbs 4:14-15. "Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way." Paths matter — avoid the route that keeps offering the same trap. See Bible verses about wisdom.
Luke 22:40. "On reaching the place, he said to them, 'Pray that you will not fall into temptation.'" Jesus repeats the prayer assignment in Gethsemane. See Bible verses about prayer.
Hebrews 2:18. "Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted." Help comes from a High Priest who suffered under temptation. See Bible verses about strength.
Ephesians 6:11. "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." Temptation is often a scheme; armor is the stance. See Bible verses about strength.
Jude 1:24. "To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—" God can keep you from stumbling; temptation is not stronger than that keeping. See Bible verses about faithfulness and Love and temptation.
Temptation in the Bible: five stories
Scripture doesn't only talk about temptation. It shows people facing it, some who fell and some who stood.
- Eve in the garden (Genesis 3). The fruit was "good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom," so "she took some and ate it" (Genesis 3:6). Temptation often looks good before it looks wrong.
- Joseph and Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39). Joseph refused: "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9). When she grabbed him, "he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house" (Genesis 39:12). Sometimes the way out is the door.
- David on the roof (2 Samuel 11). David stayed home while his army went to war, saw Bathsheba from the palace roof, and kept looking instead of turning away. One look became adultery and then murder. His prayer afterward is Psalm 51.
- Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4). Tempted three times by the devil, Jesus answered each time from Scripture: "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" (Matthew 4:4).
- Peter in the courtyard (Luke 22). Jesus told the disciples to pray so they would not fall into temptation (Luke 22:40). Peter slept, then denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. He was restored later (John 21:15-17).
How to use these verses
Pick one verse for a recurring pull, a late-night scroll, or a week when resistance feels thin — not fifteen. Read it out loud. If you need the common-and-escape promise, start with 1 Corinthians 10:13. If you need watch-and-pray, start with Matthew 26:41. If you need the essay that frames love and temptation, read Love and temptation. For the bridle of desire, see Bible verses about self-control. For a daily verse, open Bible verse of the day.
Questions people ask
How do you overcome temptation, according to the Bible?
The Bible gives a few repeated steps. Watch and pray (Matthew 26:41). Look for the way out God promises (1 Corinthians 10:13). Resist the devil and he will flee (James 4:7). Keep Scripture close: "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11). And when it's needed, leave, the way Joseph did.
What does it mean to flee temptation?
Some temptations are meant to be resisted where you stand, but the Bible tells you to run from others. "Flee the evil desires of youth" (2 Timothy 2:22) and "Flee from sexual immorality" (1 Corinthians 6:18) both use a word for running away. Joseph is the picture: he left his cloak behind rather than stay in the room (Genesis 39:12).
Who was tempted in the Bible?
Eve (Genesis 3), Joseph (Genesis 39), David (2 Samuel 11), Peter (Luke 22), and Jesus himself (Matthew 4). Hebrews 4:15 says Jesus "has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin."
What is a good Bible verse about temptation?
1 Corinthians 10:13 is the classic: temptation is common, God is faithful, and there is a way out. Matthew 26:41 says watch and pray so you will not fall into temptation.
What does the Bible say about temptation?
Temptation is common to humanity, not unique to you. God does not tempt anyone to evil. Jesus was tempted yet without sin, and he helps the tempted. Prayer, watchfulness, fleeing, and resisting the devil are repeated responses.
Does God tempt people?
James 1:13 says no — God cannot be tempted by evil and does not tempt anyone. Desire drags and entices. Trials may prove faith; that is not God baiting you into sin.
How is temptation different from sin?
Temptation is the pull or test; sin is the yielding. Jesus was tempted without sinning (Hebrews 4:15). See also Love and temptation.
Where should I read next?
Start with Love and temptation, then Bible verses about self-control and Bible verses about prayer. For the enslaving pattern that masters you, see Bible verses about addiction.
