"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs."
— 1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV)

Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "love of money" is φιλαργυρία philargyria (Strong's G5365) — avarice, greed for silver. See also Bible Hub G5365. In Hebrew, כֶּסֶף keseph (Strong's H3701; Bible Hub H3701) names silver / money — ordinary currency that still answers to God.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on 1 Timothy 6 names the danger sharply: "What sins will not men be drawn into by the love of money! People may have money, and yet not love it; but if they love it, this will push them on to all evil" (Bible Hub commentaries on 1 Timothy 6:10; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC 1 Timothy 6). On Hebrews 13 he grounds freedom from the love of money in God's presence: contentment rests on "Never will I leave you" (Bible Hub commentaries on Hebrews 13:5; Bible Hub MHC Hebrews 13).

12 Bible verses about money
1 Timothy 6:10. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." The danger is the love of money — not the paycheck itself. See Love and money.
Matthew 6:24. "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Money competes for mastery; it does not share the throne.
Proverbs 3:9-10. "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing…" Wealth is something you honor God with, not something you hide from him. See Bible verses about tithing.
Matthew 6:19-21. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Treasure location reveals heart location.
Deuteronomy 8:18. "But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…" Ability to earn is gift, not self-made myth. See Bible verses about gratitude.
Proverbs 13:11. "Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow." Slow, honest gathering outlasts dishonest shortcuts.
Luke 16:11. "So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?" Worldly wealth is a test for true riches. See Bible verses about faithfulness.
1 Timothy 6:17. "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment." Hope belongs in God, not in an uncertain portfolio. See Bible verses about hope.
Proverbs 11:28. "Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf." Trust in riches is a brittle foundation.
Proverbs 22:7. "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." Debt has power dynamics the Bible does not romanticize.
Mark 12:41-44. "…She put in everything—all she had to live on." The widow's two coins weigh more than large gifts that cost nothing. See Bible verses about generosity.
Proverbs 23:4-5. "Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone…" Exhaustion for riches is a bad bargain. See Love and money and Bible verses about rest.

Does the Bible say money is evil?
No. 1 Timothy 6:10 names the love of money as a root of evils. Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the ability to produce wealth. Greek philargyria (G5365) is the greed, not the silver itself (keseph, H3701).
