Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "reconciliation" uses καταλλαγή katallagē (Strong's G2643; Bible Hub G2643) — exchange, restoration to favor. The verb καταλλάσσω katallassō (G2644) is to reconcile. In Paul, God is the one who reconciles us to himself in Christ, then entrusts that ministry to us.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on 2 Corinthians 5 presses that God was in Christ reconciling the world, not counting sins, and that ambassadors plead "be reconciled to God" (Bible Hub commentaries on 2 Corinthians 5:18; Bible Hub MHC 2 Corinthians 5; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on 2 Corinthians 5). On Matthew 5 he ties leaving the gift at the altar to first being reconciled to a brother (Bible Hub commentaries on Matthew 5:23; Bible Hub MHC Matthew 5).

What does the Bible say about reconciliation?

Reconciliation with God comes first. Paul says, "All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation" (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). That restore happened while people were still enemies: "For if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation" (Romans 5:10-11). The means is the cross: "through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:20).

Reconciliation with others follows the same direction. Jesus says, "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24). When a brother or sister sins, "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you" (Matthew 18:15). The manner is kindness: "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32).

"For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross." Joseph moves toward the ones who harmed him under God's larger send. See Bible verses about forgiveness.

  12. Luke 15:20. "So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." The father runs — reconciliation is eager on God's side. See Bible verses about grace.

  13. James 5:16. "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed…" Confession and prayer are repair tools, not only private guilt work. See Bible verses about prayer.

Matthew 18:15 keeps the first word private: "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you." Romans 12:18 adds the honest limit: "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Releasing the debt is the companion step in Bible verses about forgiveness.
