The verse
Romans 5:8 (NIV) reads: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
The King James says, "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Same claim: God's love is proved by Christ's death for people who were not yet cleaned up.
What the verse is saying
Paul has been arguing that we are justified by faith and have peace with God. Then he names the timing: Christ died while we were still sinners. Love is not God's response to our goodness. It is shown in the death of Christ for enemies and the ungodly (see the verses just around it). "Demonstrates" means the cross is public proof, not a private mood.
