"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
— Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about grace want Scripture for undeserved favor — not a vague niceness, salvation that is gift not wage, and strength that meets weakness. This page is a numbered list of fifteen passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. The wider essay sits under Love and grace. Related lists: Bible verses about forgiveness, Bible verses about mercy, Bible verses about God's love, and Bible verses about faith. Grace here is God's free favor in Christ — distinct from the pardon focus in Bible verses about forgiveness and the compassion focus in Bible verses about mercy. The price paid is Bible verses about redemption.
Word study (lead verse). In Ephesians 2:8 Paul says you have been saved by charis — grace / favor — from Greek χάρις (Strong's G5485): undeserved kindness that gifts what we could not earn. Old Testament near-kin is Hebrew חֵן chen (Strong's H2580) — favor / grace found in God's sight. See also Bible Hub G5485 and Bible Hub H2580.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Ephesians 2 presses grace as free favor, not wages: "The grace that saves is the free, undeserved goodness and favour of God; and he saves, not by the works of the law, but through faith in Christ Jesus. Grace in the soul is a new life in the soul." (Bible Hub commentaries on Ephesians 2:8; fuller MHC on the chapter at Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Ephesians 2 and Bible Hub MHC Ephesians 2).

What does the Bible say about grace?
The same few truths about grace come up again and again in Scripture.
- Grace is a gift, not a wage. "And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace" (Romans 11:6). You can't earn it, and you can't pay it back.
- Grace saves. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith" (Ephesians 2:8). "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people" (Titus 2:11).
- Grace is enough when you are weak. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).
- Grace changes how you live. The same grace that saves "teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" (Titus 2:12).
- Grace came in a person. "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:17).
How to use these verses
