"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."
— Hebrews 12:11 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about discipline want Scripture for the Lord's loving training and correction — not only the self-control list (restraint in the moment) or perseverance (endurance under trial) alone. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Love and discipline, Bible verses about self-control, Bible verses about perseverance, and Bible verses about wisdom. Discipline here means paideia / musar — training, rebuke, and correction from a Father who delights in His children — distinct from self-control's present restraint and perseverance's long endurance.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "discipline / training" is often παιδεία paideia (Strong's G3809; Bible Hub G3809) — tutorage, education, disciplinary correction. In Hebrew, מוּסָר mûsār (Strong's H4148; Bible Hub H4148) is discipline, chastening, correction. Scripture treats discipline as love with a curriculum: do not despise it, it yields peaceful fruit of righteousness, and the Lord disciplines those He loves.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Proverbs 3 presses not despising the Lord's discipline — rebuke is a father's delight, not rejection (Bible Hub commentaries on Proverbs 3:11; Bible Hub MHC Proverbs 3; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Proverbs 3). On Hebrews 12 he marks that the Lord disciplines those He loves, and that no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but later it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace (Bible Hub commentaries on Hebrews 12:5; Bible Hub MHC Hebrews 12; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Hebrews 12).

12 Bible verses about discipline
Proverbs 22:15. "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away." Discipline aims at folly, not at the child's worth. See Love and discipline.
Hebrews 12:7. "Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?" Hardship can be fatherly training: God is treating you as his children, not abandoning you.
Hebrews 12:11. "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Discipline's fruit is later — righteousness and peace after training.
Proverbs 12:1. "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid." Loving discipline is linked to loving knowledge. See Bible verses about wisdom.
Proverbs 6:23. "For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life," Correction and instruction are a path to life, not a dead end.
Job 5:17. "Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty." Correction can be named a blessing — refuse despising it.
Proverbs 10:17. "Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray." Heeding discipline shows a way of life; ignoring correction leads others off the path.
Deuteronomy 8:5. "Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you." Wilderness training is fatherly discipline.
Psalm 94:12. "Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law;" Discipline and teaching from the law belong together — blessed, not cursed.
Proverbs 13:18. "Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored." Ignoring discipline has outcomes; heeding correction leads to honor.
1 Corinthians 11:32. "Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world." Present discipline can spare final condemnation.
Proverbs 4:13. "Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life." Instruction is something to guard, not a lecture to outgrow. See Bible verses about perseverance.
How to use these verses
Pick one verse for a hard season of correction, a parenting conversation about training, or a prayer when discipline feels only painful — not twelve. If you need folly driven far away, start with Proverbs 22:15. If you need the later harvest of peace, start with Hebrews 12:11. If you need the father-treats-you-as-children word, start with Hebrews 12:7. For restraint in the moment (not training over time), see Bible verses about self-control. For endurance under trial, see Bible verses about perseverance. For the essay companion, see Love and discipline. For a daily verse, open Bible verse of the day.
Questions people ask
What is a good Bible verse about discipline?
Hebrews 12:11 (later harvest of peace), Hebrews 12:7 (God treats you as his children), and Proverbs 22:15 (discipline drives folly far away) are clear starting places.
How do Bible verses about discipline differ from self-control or perseverance?

Is God's discipline the same as punishment?
Scripture frames it as fatherly training for those He loves (Proverbs 3; Hebrews 12), aimed at a harvest of righteousness and peace — not final condemnation (1 Corinthians 11:32).

No. Hebrews 12 addresses adult believers as sons; Revelation 3:19 is Christ's word to a church. Parental correction texts sit alongside the Lord's discipline of His people.
