The verse
1 John 4:18 (NIV) says, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
The ESV reads, "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love." "Casts out" and "drives out" are exō ballei: love throws that fear outside.
What perfect love casts out fear means
"Perfect" here is teleia: complete, brought to its end — the same family as love "made complete" in 1 John 4:12 and 4:17. It is not a score you manufacture until you feel calm. John has already said this love starts with God: he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice (1 John 4:10). Verse 19 keeps the order: we love because he first loved us.
The fear John names is tied to punishment (kolasis), in the same breath as confidence on the day of judgment (verse 17). He is not listing every nervous feeling, heights, or a doctor's report. He is talking about the dread of standing condemned.
How this sits in 1 John 4
John has said God is love (1 John 4:8; 1 John 4:16). He has said love is made complete among us so we have confidence on the day of judgment. Verse 18 explains that confidence: fear of punishment leaves when that love is complete. Verse 19 answers who loved first. Love and Fear is the wider study across Scripture.
Questions people ask
What Bible verse says perfect love casts out fear?
1 John 4:18. The ESV says "perfect love casts out fear"; the NIV says "perfect love drives out fear." That is the verse people mean.
What does perfect love casts out fear mean?
It means love that has been made complete throws out the dread of punishment. Perfect means complete, not a flawless mood you wait to feel. The fear in view is fear of condemnation, not every ordinary scare.
Is the perfect love God's love or mine?
It is God's love brought to completion among his people. John says God loved first and sent his Son. Reading the verse as "become perfectly loving, then stop being afraid" reverses verse 19.
Does this mean Christians should never feel afraid?
No. John is writing about fear of punishment next to the day of judgment. A wise caution or a heavy week is not proof you are outside God's love. Love and Fear follows other kinds of fear in Scripture.
