Bible Verses About True God: 12

"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

— John 17:3 (NIV)

People who search bible verses about true God want Scripture on the John 17:3 / 1 John 5:20 title — theos alēthinos / the only true God — not only the broader Everlasting God inventory alone or the I Am list alone. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about Everlasting God, Bible verses about El Elyon, Bible verses about El Shaddai, Bible verses about Jesus, Bible verses about eternal life, Bible verses about faith, Bible verses about salvation, Bible verses about God's love, Bible verses about worship, and Bible verse of the day. True God here means John 17:3's alēthinos title — distinct from the Everlasting-God / I-Am lists alone.

Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "true" in this title is ἀληθινός alēthinos (Strong's G228; Bible Hub G228) — true, real, genuine, as opposed to false or counterfeit. Jesus prays to "the only true God" — ton monon alēthinon theon — and ties knowing him to eternal life. 1 John 5:20 says the Son of God has given understanding so we may know him who is true, and we are in him who is true. This list tracks that alēthinos title and related only-true-God lines, not every God-name verse and not Everlasting God alone.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on John 17 presses eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he sent (Bible Hub MHC John 17; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on John 17). On 1 John 5 he presses knowing him that is true (Bible Hub MHC 1 John 5; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on 1 John 5). (Everlasting God and I Am live on those pages; this list centers the true-God title.)
