"He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: 'What have you done?'"
— Daniel 4:35 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about sovereignty want Scripture on God's rightful rule — exousia and malkût — not only the broader kingdom of God list, the providence list, or the God's power list alone. This page is a numbered list of twelve passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. Related lists: Bible verses about the kingdom of God, Bible verses about providence, Bible verses about God's power, Bible verses about God's glory, Bible verses about covenant, and Bible verse of the day. Sovereignty here means God's supreme authority to rule heaven and earth — distinct from kingdom as the realm of his reign, providence as his wise care, or power as his mighty acts.
Word study (lead theme). In Greek, "authority" is ἐξουσία exousia (Strong's G1849; Bible Hub G1849) — right, liberty, authority to act. In Hebrew, "kingdom / reign" is often מַלְכוּת malkût (Strong's H4438; Bible Hub H4438) — royalty, reign, dominion. Daniel presses that the Most High rules the kingdoms of men; the Psalms and New Testament join that God does whatever he pleases and that all authority belongs to Christ.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Daniel 4 presses that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will, and that Nebuchadnezzar's recovery teaches humble acknowledgment of God's sovereign hand (Bible Hub MHC Daniel 4; Blue Letter Bible, Matthew Henry on Daniel 4). (Kingdom, providence, and power lists live on those pages; this list centers sovereign rule.)

Questions people ask
What is a good Bible verse about sovereignty?
Daniel 4:35 (he does as he pleases), Psalm 103:19 (his kingdom rules over all), and Matthew 28:18 (all authority given to Christ) are clear starting places.
How do Bible verses about sovereignty differ from kingdom, providence, or power?
The kingdom page centers God's reign as realm and gospel. The providence page centers wise care in ordinary life. The God's power page centers mighty acts. A sovereignty page centers exousia and malkût — God's supreme right to rule — then cross-links kingdom, providence, and power. See Bible verses about providence.
What do exousia and malkût mean?
Greek exousia (G1849) means authority or right to act. Hebrew malkût (H4438) means kingdom, reign, or royal dominion. Together they frame God's sovereign rule in both Testaments.
Does sovereignty cancel human responsibility?
Scripture holds both: God works all things according to his will (Ephesians 1:11) and people are called to repent, believe, and obey. Sovereignty is not an excuse for passivity. See Bible verses about repentance.
Where can I read more about kingdom, providence, and God's power?
Start with Bible verses about the kingdom of God, then Bible verses about providence, Bible verses about God's power, and Bible verses about God's glory.
