"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God."
— Psalm 42:5 (NIV)
People who search bible verses about depression want Scripture for a heavy, cast-down soul — not a scolding to "just have joy," and not a substitute for care when life is clinically dark. This page is a numbered list of fifteen passages with the NIV text and a short note on each. It is pastoral Scripture, not medical advice. The wider essay sits under Love and depression. Related lists: Bible verses about hope, Bible verses about worry, Bible verses about loneliness, Bible verses about grief, and Bible verses for encouragement. Depression here means a downcast, pressed spirit — distinct from mourning a specific loss in Bible verses about grief and from anxious dread in Bible verses about worry.

Word study (lead theme). In Greek, deep distress can use ἀδημονέω adēmoneō (Strong's G85) — to be troubled, in anguish, heavy. See also Bible Hub G85. In Hebrew, כְּאֵב ke'eb (Strong's H3511; Bible Hub H3511) means pain or sorrow — the ache that settles in body and spirit when the soul is low.
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on Psalm 40 speaks to souls who have been in that pit: "Those that have been under religious melancholy, and by the grace of God have been relieved, may apply ver. 2 very feelingly to themselves; they are brought up out of a horrible pit" (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalm 40:2; fuller MHC at Bible Hub MHC Psalm 40). On Psalm 42 he names the cure's direction: "See the cure of sorrow. When the soul rests on itself, it sinks; if it catches hold on the power and promise of God, the head is kept above the billows" (Bible Hub commentaries on Psalm 42:5; Bible Hub MHC Psalm 42).

15 Bible verses about depression
Psalm 42:5. "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God." The psalmist talks to his own downcast soul and aims it at God — without pretending the heaviness is already gone. See Bible verses about hope.
Psalm 40:1-3. "I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth…" Waiting and crying come before the new song. See Love and depression.
Matthew 11:28-30. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Rest is offered to the weary, not earned by the already cheerful. See Bible verses about humility.
Psalm 143:7-8. "Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me… Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you." A failing spirit still asks for morning word of love.
1 Kings 19:4-8. Elijah "came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die… 'I have had enough, Lord.'" God meets him with sleep, food, and a journey — not a lecture. Exhausted servants are not abandoned. See Love and depression.
Psalm 31:9-10. "Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning…" Distress can touch eyes, soul, and body together; the psalm still asks for mercy.
2 Corinthians 1:8-10. "We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead." Even an apostle names despair of life — and the God who raises the dead.
Psalm 77:1-3. "I cried out to God for help… When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint." Seeking God and still feeling faint can happen in the same night.
Psalm 23:3. "…he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake." A refreshed soul is the Shepherd's work, not a self-help project. See Bible verses about God's love.
Nahum 1:7. "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him." Refuge is for trouble times, not only for cheerful ones.
Psalm 9:9. "The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble." Oppression and trouble get a stronghold, not a pep talk. See Bible verses about strength.
Isaiah 50:10. "Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God." Walking without light can still mean trusting the Name — darkness is named, not denied.
Psalm 130:1-2. "Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy." Depths are a valid place to pray from.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." Pressed and perplexed are honest; crushed and abandoned are refused as the final word.
Psalm 119:28. "My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." Weariness with sorrow asks for strength from the word, not from pretending the sorrow is light. See Bible verses about strength and Love and depression.
How to use these verses
Pick one verse for a morning you cannot get out of bed easily, a week when praise feels far away, or a quiet admission that your soul is downcast — not fifteen. Read it out loud. If you need permission to name the heaviness, start with Psalm 42:5. If you need the pit named, start with Psalm 40:1-3. If you need the essay that frames love and depression, read Love and depression. For worry beside heaviness, see Bible verses about worry. For a daily verse, open Bible verse of the day. If you are in crisis, also seek human help — Scripture steadies; it does not replace care.
